Jan and Elaine Grieveson left the UK in June 2010 aboard their Moody 44, Mychi, to fulfil a lifetime dream: to sail away with no destination in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n

Their journey took them through the inland seas of Holland and the French canals to the island of Levkas in the southern Ionian, which became their Mediterranean base for seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n

Levkas has a large liveaboard community, and the two biggest topics of conversation are battery management and anchoring. Upgrades usually mean structural changes: gantries to carry solar panels, and extended bow rollers to tame the new breed of anchors such as Rocna, Manson and Spade.<\/p>\n\n\n

Jan, a time-served welder fabricator who ran his own engineering business for more than 25 years, picked up the tools again. He built his own solar panel gantry and the stainless fittings for managing the main anchor, the kedge and the many other components that make shorthanded cruising easier.<\/p>\n\n\n

Once word got round, Jan was soon designing and building gantries, passerelles, anchor tamers and sternline systems for other liveaboard and cruising sailors.<\/p>\n\n\n

Back home in the North East<\/h2>\n\n\n

In summer 2018 Jan and Elaine sailed Mychi back to the UK via northern Greece, Italy, Sicily, Corsica and the French canals to their home port of Blyth in Northumberland.<\/p>\n\n\n

After thirteen years of humming and hawing, Jan and Elaine finally tied the knot in September 2013, and the liveaboard community did them proud by decorating their yachts for the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n
